The township is governed by a Board of Supervisors consisting of three members, all elected for six year terms, one term expiring every two years on December 31.
Some of their responsibilities include making appropriations, adopting a budget, levying taxes, and adopting resolutions to make rules and regulations.
The Board meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Municipal Building, Route 715, Brodheadsville.

Residents of Chestnuthill Township are required to pay a 1% earned income tax, which is assessed on all wages, salaries, commissions, and profits. Any resident who is self-employed or whose employer does not withhold the 1% earned income tax must file quarterly an estimated declaration and make payments. Everyone must file a final return with the Earned Income Tax Office on or before April 15 of the following year. A final return is required even though all taxes may have been withheld from wages.
Effective February 1, 2009 Chestnuthill Township has contracted with Berkheimer Tax Administrator to be collector of earned income tax. All 2008 individual final earned income tax returns and 2009 employer quarterly returns are to be filed with Berkheimer.

The Township has an ordinance regulating the subdivision of land, adjustment of lot lines and development of lots for all purposes. Plans for all are subject to review by the Planning Commission and approval by the Board of Supervisors. Pennsylvania State Law mandates these reviews, and all approved plans are required to be recorded with the Monroe County Recorder of Deeds. A copy of the Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance may be reviewed and/or purchased at the Township Municipal building.

The Township adopted a Zoning Ordinance and map September 26, 2000 (updated as of February 25, 2003). This ordinance regulates the use, intensity of use, size and location of buildings, and other structures, as well as establishing regulations for landuse by trades, industry, recreation and public activities. The provisions of the ordinance addresses all use of property, whether commercial or residential, including but not limited to buildings, fences, sheds, garages, signs, swimming pools, and in-home professional offices. A copy of the Zoning Ordinance may be reviewed and/or purchased at the Township Municipal building.

The Zoning Hearing Board is responsible for: An appeal of a decision by the Zoning Officer; A challenge to the Validity of the Ordinance or Map; A Variance; A Special Exception; and other matters as set forth in the State Municipalities Planning Code.
The Zoning Hearing Board meets as needed, as scheduled on a Monday Evening at 7:00 PM.

The Township's Road Department has been in existence for over 40 years. The road department is responsible for snow removal, road signage, road maintenance, mowing and keeping the 150 miles of Township roadways free of obstructions. The Road Department responds to constituent calls, as well as emergency situations due to weather. The township's traffic engineer is Reilly Associates. They are responsible for reviewing subdivision plans, as well as traffic counts and other related matters.

The Park Commission was formed in 1992 as an advisory Board of Supervisors for developing plans, schedules, and goals for the Chestnuthill Township Park properties. Since 1992, the commission has been instrumental in the planning of the current facilities, which include two miles of paved trails and a community and senior citizens building. There is a large all-purpose activities field, multi-sports courts, and two playgrounds, including the only handicap accessible playground in Monroe County, and parking facilities that can accommodate 120 vehicles.
